What Is GEO? How to Get Your Business Cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI

Generative engine optimisation (GEO) explained: how AI assistants choose which companies to mention, how GEO differs from SEO, and a practical checklist to become visible in AI answers.

GEO, short for generative engine optimisation, is the work of making your business easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews to understand, trust and cite in their answers. Where SEO aims to rank a page in a list of links, GEO aims to have your company named in the answer itself.

Why does GEO matter now?

More people now ask an assistant "which agency can build an online store in Germany?" or "what is a good accounting tool for small businesses?" instead of scanning ten blue links. The assistant reads sources, summarises them and often recommends a few names. If your business is not described clearly anywhere the model reads, you are simply not in the conversation, however good your service is.

How is GEO different from SEO?

  • Goal: SEO wants a high position for a page; GEO wants your brand mentioned and cited correctly in a generated answer.
  • Unit: SEO thinks in pages and keywords; GEO thinks in entities (your company, services, location) and facts.
  • Signals: both reward fast, well-structured, trustworthy sites. GEO puts extra weight on clear, quotable statements and consistent information across the web.
  • Measurement: SEO uses rankings and clicks; GEO checks how assistants answer real questions about your category.

The good news is that they share foundations. A technically sound site with honest, specific content helps both.

How do AI assistants decide which companies to mention?

Each system works differently and none publishes a full recipe, but the patterns are consistent. Assistants with web search retrieve pages that answer the question directly, prefer sources that state facts plainly, and cross-check names that appear consistently in several places. Vague marketing copy is hard to quote; a sentence like "We build Shopify stores for companies selling in Germany and Turkey" is easy to quote.

A practical GEO checklist

  1. Write one clear sentence that says who you are, what you do and where, and use it consistently on your site, profiles and directories.
  2. Give every service its own page that opens with a direct answer to "what is it, who is it for, how long does it take".
  3. Add structured data: Organization or ProfessionalService, Service, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and Article where they apply.
  4. Use question-style headings and short paragraphs that can be lifted into an answer without losing meaning.
  5. Publish specifics: real project timelines, the platforms you use, the countries you serve. Avoid claims you cannot support.
  6. Allow AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt, and consider an llms.txt file that summarises your site.
  7. Keep your company details identical on Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and partner sites.
  8. Earn mentions on industry sites, local business lists and publications, because assistants weigh what others say about you.

How do you measure GEO results?

Start with a baseline: ask the main assistants the questions your buyers ask, such as "best web design agency in Istanbul" or "who can help a start-up with SEO in Europe", and record whether and how you are mentioned. Repeat every quarter after improving your site and profiles. Add referral traffic from AI tools to your analytics, where they identify themselves, and track brand searches, which often rise when assistants start mentioning you.

Who should invest in GEO first?

Service businesses that are chosen after research, such as agencies, consultancies, clinics, software companies and B2B suppliers, benefit most, because their buyers ask comparison questions. E-commerce brands benefit too, especially for "best product for" questions. If you are already investing in SEO, adding GEO is usually a small step with a large upside.

Frequently asked questions

What does GEO stand for?

Generative engine optimisation: improving how AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews understand and cite your business.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. GEO builds on SEO. Fast, well-structured and trustworthy sites perform better in both search results and AI answers, so the two are best done together.

What is llms.txt?

A plain-text file at the root of a website that summarises its key pages and facts for language models. It is a simple, low-cost addition to a GEO setup.
